Give with Your Heart: Why Generosity Builds Character

Welcome back to Lessons with Amir & Aryah, where money isn’t just about what we earn or save, but how we use it to make the world better.

So far, Amir and Aryah have learned how to save with purpose, spend with wisdom, and explore how to invest in their future. But today’s lesson might be the most powerful one yet: giving.

💡 What Is the Give Jar?

Aryah once said,

“Even if I don’t have a lot, I can still give something.”

That’s what the Give Jar is all about, learning to share what we have, even when it’s small, and thinking of others before ourselves.

It teaches that money isn’t just for getting. It’s for blessing, helping, and building up others. Whether it’s a donation, a gift, or a kind act, giving shapes the kind of person we become.

🧠 Character Focus: Compassion
The Give Jar teaches compassion. It helps kids think beyond their own needs and notice the needs around them. It also reminds them that generosity isn’t about how much, it’s about the heart behind it.

When Amir and Aryah walked into the community center and gave part of their earnings to Ms. Zuri, they weren’t just giving money. They were giving joy, support, and hope. And they left with something greater than money, purpose.

🏡 Try This at Home: The Giving Goal Challenge

  1. Ask your child:
“If you could help someone today, who would it be?”
  2. Help them choose a giving goal—like donating $2 to a cause, buying food for someone in need, or making a gift bag for a friend.
  3. Set aside a small amount from their Give Jar and let them deliver the gift in person or draw a picture of what they’d give.
  4. Afterward, ask:
    “How did that feel?”

💬 Family Conversation Starter:

“What’s something kind someone did for you and how did it make you feel? How can we do that for someone else?”

Helping children connect emotionally with giving builds empathy that lasts for life.
